Dr. Hoyer graduated summa cum laude and received his master's degree in computer science from Brandeis University prior to graduating from the Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel. He completed his internship in internal medicine at Norshore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY and subsequently finished his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from John's Hopkins University. He excelled during his residency receiving the Hopkins Healer award twice and was selected as a trainee to the Rehabilitation Medicine Scientist Training Program. His research interests are in studying novel technologies to improve rehabilitation strategies. Currently he is working on projects with non-invasive brain stimulation (i.e. transcranial direct current stimulation) to study brain neuroplasticity and neurophysiological mechanisms associated with motor recovery. He is performing this research under the mentorship of Amy Bastian Ph.D. and Pablo Celnik M.D. His clinical interests include electrodiagnostics (EMG), neurorehabilitation, musculoskeletal rehabilitation and injection procedures to manage abnormal muscle tone (spasticity).
