Dr. Adams joined the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation faculty at Johns Hopkins University in 2008. She completed her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) in 2002. She went on to a post-doctoral fellowship at the Dallas Veterans Affairs Hospital, followed by a faculty post at UTSW. She has extensive teaching experience in undergraduate and graduate psychology courses, including a lectureship at Southern Methodist University.
Dr. Adams has worked with a variety of clinical populations, including: substance related disorders, psychological trauma, severe psychopathology, and a variety of disease states and physical disabilities (e.g., chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputations, dementia, cancer, etc.) In her current role as an attending psychologist for the Johns Hopkins inpatient rehabilitation service at Good Samaritan Hospital, Dr. Adams performs psychological and neurocognitive assessments, and provides interventions for patients and families who are adjusting to spinal cord injuries and other neurological disorders.
Dr. Adams’ research experience includes examining the effectiveness of cognitive and behavioral interventions for managing acute and chronic pain, and assessing risk of opiate misuse in chronic pain patients. Additional research interests include the identification of personality, socio-cultural, and cognitive variables related to psychological resiliency in individuals coping with physical/psychological trauma and high-mortality illnesses.
