Philosophical Statement

            The Johns Hopkins Hospital is a teaching institution that strongly promotes education, research and patient care.  The educational mission of  Johns Hopkins Hospital is to “operate cooperatively and interdependently with the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University and to support education in the health professions”.  The physical therapy department provides clinical education of both physical therapist and physical therapist assistant students consistent with the mission of the hospital.

Program Objective

            The objective of the clinical education program is to provide high quality clinical experiences to students from a variety of colleges and universities throughout the United States. Observational experiences are provided to physical therapists and physical therapy students both within and outside the United States. To meet this objective department management provides the following support :

• A physical therapy supervisor is designated as the Center Coordinator of Clinical Education (CCCE)
•  Education of students is a performance standard for staff
•  Therapists and therapist assistants with a minimum of one year of clinical experience are encouraged to become a clinical instructor for full time affiliations.
•  Therapists and therapist assistants with less than one year of clinical experience are encouraged to provide clinical instruction to short term nursing and physical therapy students. (One – several days)
• The department sponsors an annual training session for Clinical Instructors
• Speakers from academic institutions are encouraged to share their expertise with staff.
• A student lecture series is available to all students
• Students are encouraged to participate in rounds, observe clinics and  surgeries, and participate in educational experiences available at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
