The Johns Hopkins Mission
More than a century ago, the Baltimore merchant Johns Hopkins did more than provide in his estate for the construction of a university, a hospital and a medical school. He set the stage for a university-based health center with a mission: to create a learning, training and caring environment where the quest for new knowledge would continuously yield more effective and more compassionate care for all. Today, after more than a century of leadership in health care, the quest for medical discoveries leading to better health care remains the defining mission of Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Research conducted at Johns Hopkins has far-reaching impacts, affecting how diseases are diagnosed and treated throughout the world. This research continues to flourish with the support of grateful patients, alumni and friends who choose to provide through their philanthropy.
The Henry Phipps Psychiatric Clinic
Upon visiting the Tuberculosis Division he had founded at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, philanthropist Henry Phipps asked William Welch, dean of the medical faculty, whether there were any projects he could sponsor. Welch gave Phipps a copy of Clifford Beers's A Mind That Found Itself. The next month, in June 1905, endowment of the Henry Phipps Psychiatric Clinic was publicly announced. Adolf Meyer was invited to Johns Hopkins to develop its Department of Psychiatry, and in April 1913, the Henry Phipps Psychiatric Clinic was opened. Since then, the department has occupied a distinguished place in the history of psychiatry, with a continuous tradition of excellence in patient care, teaching and research.
