Mood Disorders Program Director: Karen L. Swartz M.D. OVERVIEW The Mood Disorders Day Hospital Program was developed to offer a smooth transition for recovering patients from the inpatient setting to home. It is conducted from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm on Meyer 4 at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Patients are seen by the medical staff during walking rounds each morning and individual treatment plans are reviewed then. The remainder of the day is spent in group therapy sessions held both on and off the unit. Patient bring and self-administer their medications. ADMISSION CRITERIA - You must be 18 years of age or older and need assessment and continued treatment for an affective disorder.
- You must be able to live safely outside the hospital.
- You are able to live independently and have sufficinet support to take part in day treatment.
- You must have safe and reliable transportation to and from the day hospital.
WHAT TO EXPECT Upon admission, a plan of care is developed to help you meet your optimal state of wellness by the time you are discharged. We encourage you to be an an active participant in your recovery. An experienced, multidisciplinary team will provide care tailored to your needs. An attending psychiatrist will be meeting with you on a daily basis to assess mood symptoms, medication changes and any concerns you may have for the day. A registered nurse will meet with you individually to assess your mood symptoms and provide medication education. A social worker provides individual and family counseling, illness education, and group therapy to increase your capacity to cope with your illness and improve your quality of life. They can also assist with discharge planning and referrals to community resources. DISCHARGE POLICIES You will be actively involved in planning for your discharge from the Day Hospital. Discharge readiness involves: - Improvement in your symptoms
- Achievement of your treatment goals planned between you and the treatment team
- The need to be admitted to an inpatient unit
- Inability to comply with Day Hospital program and its rules
