Memory and Neuropsychiatry Inpatient Unit

The Memory and Neuropsychiatry Unit of The Johns Hopkins Hospital provides comprehensive, interdisciplinary hospital care to patients with psychiatric and behavioral symptoms in the context of coarse brain disease that require inpatient care. Patients are referred with a wide range of neuropsychiatric disturbances, including dementia, delirium, mood and anxiety disorders, psychoses, and problem behaviors occurring in patients with Alzheimer's disease, stroke, brain trauma, brain anoxia, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, epilepsy, ALS, multiple sclerosis, or others.

TREATMENT PROGRAM

The treatment team, including an attending psychiatrist who is a member of the Johns Hopkins faculty, a resident physician, a nurse, an occupational therapist, and a social worker, meet daily to discuss the patient's progress. Members of the treatment team are specially trained to attend to the needs of patients with neuropsychiatric disturbances. Some of the services provided by the inpatient treatment team include:

• Education about illness and treatment to patients and caregivers
• Rehabilitative interventions, such as occupational and physical therapy
• Psychotherapy
• Daily life scheduling
• Behavior modification therapies
• Psychotherapeutic medication
• Fall risk management
• Most necessary treatments for other medical conditions, such as intravenous therapy, antibiotic therapy, parenetal nutrition, addictive substance tapers, and others

The Memory and Neuropsychiatry Unit recognizes the vital role of family members, caregivers, and other significant persons in the care of these pateints and involves them to the greatest extent possible. The goal of the overall care plan of these complex patients is to provide a safe and highly sophisticated clinical environment where patients can be fully evaluated and stabilized prior to return to the most appropriate community setting.

ADMISSIONS

Inpatient admissions to the Memory and Neuropsychiatry Unit must be coordinated through the Adult Psychiatry Admissions office during business hours. After hours and weekend admissions are arranged through Emergency Psychiatry.
