The Frontotemporal Dementia and Young-Onset Dementias Clinic is dedicated to the care of individuals who suffer from frontotemporal dementias (FTD), Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), and those who are under 65 years of age with any type of dementia. The Clinic is conducting many research projects, including clinical trials and studies of day-to-day care, as well as epidemiologic, neuropsychiatric, neuropathological, and genetic investigations. Located in the Neuropsychiatry Program of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry, the Clinic serves Maryland, neighboring states, and the District of Columbia. Our services are also available for consultations and clinical care for patients from anywhere in the United States or abroad. We offer a number of medical services relating to the evaluation and care of individuals suffering from these dementias: diagnostic evaluations, illness education, pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments, and, in specific circumstances, admission to a specialized hospital unit. Our commitment to the sufferers of young-onset dementias and their families also includes a range of support services such as: - Management of symptoms commonly associated with dementia
- A support group for sufferers of FTD
- Counseling for careers (dementia-care education, assistance with the management of social and financial resources, and assistance with long-term care planning)
- Social work services
- Liaison with respite care and residential care providers
- Guidance with issues pertaining to dependent children
- Home visits (in certain circumstances)
- Conducting research to improve identification and treatment of these diseases
