2008 William Walker Awards

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is pleased to announce this year's winners of the William Walker Award. This is an annual prize given to first-year medical students to conduct psychiatry-related research in the summer between their first and second year of medical school. With many excellent proposals this year but limited funds, awards are being made at two levels.

The following students and projects are awarded $1000 each:

Jennifer Cai, along with Dr. Ziegelstein and Dr. Magyar-Russell, will examine the relationship of stress, depressed mood, and anxiety to cardiac arrhythmia among individuals with implantable cardioversion defibrillators.

Sujay Pathak, under the mentorship of Dr. Rabins and Dr. Rosenblatt will examine the effectiveness of music therapy on behavioral disturbances in the Maryland Assisted Living Study.

Matthew Peters will join Dr. Lyketsos and Dr. Rosenberg on an analysis of sex-specific rate of cognitive decline in the Cache County study.

Jacob Taylor, working with Dr. Kaplin on the effects of antidepressants on neurologic and behavioral phenotypes in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis.

Natalia Vlassova will work with Dr. Treisman on the relationship of antivirals and psychiatric disorders in patients with HIV.

The following students are awarded $500 each:

Brandon Metcalf will continue his work at Kennedy-Krieger on the histology of olfactory receptors in Rett Syndrome; a clinical trial dextromethorphan in Rett Syndrome; and the natural history of Rett Syndrome.

Sarah Ramsay will join Dr. Swartz on the Adolescent Depression Awareness Program to analyze factors influencing response to adolescent education about depression.

Miriam Stewart will work with Dr. Frosch, Dr. Larson, and Dr. dos Reis in Child Psychiatry and Dr. Solomon in Pediatrics on factors involved in the decisions to seek care, on barriers to follow-up, and on an education-related project.

Daniel Sun will work with Dr. Sawa and Dr. Cascella on the gene expression in olfactory epithelia in schizophrenia and on clinical study of the manifestations of schizophrenia.
