The Research Conference has been a tradition of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences for more than 25 years. The conference began as a small forum for the presentation of departmental faculty members' research-in-progress. Its scope has grown considerably in recent years, with the goal of providing faculty, residents, students, and staff of the department a perspective on current research and thought in psychiatry and related disciplines. The Research Conference is also a forum for junior members of the department to describe their research endeavors in a formal, but friendly, setting.

Each year, Dr. DePaulo, Dr. Moran, and Dr. Margolis develop a list of speakers for the upcoming year.  Names of potential speakers are solicited from all members of the department. Approximately a third of the speakers are senior faculty members from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences or other Johns Hopkins Departments; another third are junior investigators, fellows, and students from Johns Hopkins; and the last thrid are leaders in their fields of investigation who are not members of the departmental faculty.

The Research Conference is open to the faculty, students, and staff of Johns Hopkins University and their professional visitors. Outside speakers usually have time set aside before or after the conference to meet on an individual basis with interested faculty, residents, and students. The conference is sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, with no involvement of the pharmaceutical industry. A bag lunch is provided courtesy of the Department.
