Psychiatry Grand Rounds are open to the staff and students of Johns Hopkins Medicine, the Bloomberg School of Public Health and to their professional visitors. Please notify the Chairman's office (410-955-3130) if you would like to bring a guest to rounds.

Johns Hopkins Medicine now prohibits pharmaceutical and other sales representatives from attending Grand Rounds.

Grand Rounds in the Johns Hopkins Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences began in 1913. Their original format included the presentation of a patient’s case history and an examination of the patient. That format is continued today. A resident begins the Rounds by presenting the case. The patient who has volunteered to participate in the Rounds is typically from one of the inpatient services, outpatient clinics, or is a private patient of a faculty member. The patient is then interviewed by Dr. DePaulo, and following that a faculty member gives a lecture related to the case under consideration. Dr. DePaulo leads the discussion, which is open to all members of the audience.

Objectives

  1. Justify the use of new treatment methods using empirical data.
  2. Differentiate diagnostic categories using both D.S.M. IV and published data or unpublished clinical outcomes.
  3. Describe the clinicians’ roles with patients and families with differing diagnoses and other variable clinical characteristics.

Written summaries of the Rounds have been maintained in the Department since 1976. The presenting faculty member prepares minutes of the Rounds with suitable references. These are distributed at Grand Rounds on the following Monday and are available in the Chairman's office.

We observe confidentiality and traditional etiquette for Grand Rounds, including professional attire and demeanor. Eating and drinking are not permitted.
