Paul R. McHugh, M.D., the University Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry and former department chairman received this year's Sarnat Award in Mental Health from the Institute of Medicine for his lifetime contributions to psychiatric scholarship and clinical care.

Robert Brooner, Ph.D. was selected as a 2009 recipient of The Marie Nyswander and Vincent Dole Annual Award for outstanding contributions to the treatment of opioid dependence disorder. Drs. Nyswander and Dole are internationally recognized for the psychological and pharmacological work that directly led to their discovery of methadone as an effective treatment for many people suffering from opioid dependence disorder. The award has since been given to individuals whose work has substantially advanced the evolving understanding and treatment of opioid dependence. The American Association of Treatment of Opioid Dependence (AATOD), assumed the responsibility for administrating the Nyswander/Dole Award in the 1990s.
2008 NARSAD Awards
Three researchers in the department were awarded grants from the National Alliance of Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, known as NARSAD. Mikhail V. Pletnikov, Ph.D. and James B. Potash, M.D., M.PH. received Independent Investigator Awards. Vani Rao, M.D., Akiko Hayashi, M.D., Ph.D., and Fernando S. Goes, M.D. received Young Investigators Awards.
Matt W. Specht, Ph.D. andJohn T. Walkup, M.D. of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry have been named distinguished recipients of one of 21 research awards from the national Tourette Syndrome Association (TSA).
Gregory Pontone, M.D., assistant professor, is the recipient of the 2008-2009 Mentored Clinical Research Award from the Parkinson's Disease Foundation and the Parkinson's Study Group. He will be mentored by Laura Marsh, M.D., associate professor and director of the Parkinson's and Related Disorders Clinic.
Hendree E. Jones, Ph.D. associate professor and research director of the Center for Addiction and Pregnancy at Bayview, was elected 2009 President of the Psychopharmacology Division of the American Psychological Association.
Geetha Jayaram, M.D has recieved the Distinguished Service award from the American Association of Psychiatric Administrators at the APA meeting in May in recognition of her administrative leadership.
Hendree E. Jones, Ph.D., associate professor and research director of the Center for Addiction and Pregnancy at Bayview, is the 2008 recipient of the Joseph Cochin Young Investigator Award for outstanding early career contributions to the field by the College on Problems of Drug Dependence.

Chester W. Schmidt, Jr. M.D., professor and former Director of Johns Hopkins Bayview Psychiatry has been honored with the APA's 2008 Warren Williams Assembly Speaker's Award.
2007
Lee McCabe, Ph.D., associate professor, was presented with the 2007 Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Profession of Psychology at the Annual Meeting of the Maryland Psychological Association.
Akira Sawa, M.D., Ph.D. , associate professor of psychiatry, has been awarded the Daniel H. Efron Research Award for 2007 by the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology. Presented at the December meeting of the ACNP, the award is given for outstanding basic/translational research contributions to the field.
In November, the Joint Commission named Addiction Treatment Services of Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, a 2007 recipient of the 11th annual Ernest Amory Codman Award. A new award, bestowed by the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP), has been named in honor of Deirdre Johnston, MB BCh MRCPsych., assistant professor of psychiatry. Called the AAGP Award for Excellence and Innovation in Geriatric Outreach Mental Health Services, the honor will be presented to programs that improve mental health services to the frail elderly in their homes. It includes a $10,000 award, made possible by Mr. Arnold Snider through the Geriatric Mental Health Foundation.
Michelle Mielke, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychiatry, has been named one of tem recipients of the International Junior Investigator Award given by the International College of Geriatric Psychoneuropharmacology.
Jeffrey Janofsky, M.D., associate professor of psychiatry and director of the Pscyhiatry and Law Program, has been installed as president of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law.
James C. Harris, M.D., professor of psychiatry, was presented with the Agnes Purcell McGavin Award for a distinguished career in child and adolescent psychiatry at the 2007 APA Annual Meeting.
Holly Wilcox, Ph.D. has received the 2006-2007 Advising, Mentoring and Teaching Recognition Award (AMTRA) from the students of the Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Francis M. Mondimore, M.D., assistant professor of psychiatry, had been named to the Faculty Editorial Board of The Johns Hopkins Press.
Golda S. Ginsburg, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychiatry in the division of child and adolescent psychiatry, is one of eight scientists nationally to receive a joint 2007 research award from the Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation. She will study the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy with parental participation to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder in children.
Hochang B. Lee, M.D., assistant professor of psychiatry at the Bayview Medical Center, has been awarded the 2007 Din/Fischer Award for significant achievement in clinical research by the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine.
Constantine G. Lyketsos, M.D., M.P.H., recently appointed Director of Psychiatry at Hopkins Bayview, was honored with an endowed chair. On Thursday, May 3, Lyketsos became the first recipient of the Elizabeth Plank Althouse professorship for Alzheimer’s Research. Click here for details.

Adam Kaplin, M.D. has been appointed to chair the Montel Williams Multiple Sclerosis Foundation Scientific Advisory Board, a multidisciplinary group of leading neurologists and MS physician-scientists that helps guide the Foundation's proposal selection process.
The Johns Hopkins Burn Center Psychology Team, led by James A. Fauerbach, Ph.D., has been awarded the 2007 Clinical Research Award by the American Burn Association.
Lee McCabe, Ph.D. received the Co-Founders Award from the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation. The award recognizes him for training Baltimore-area religious leasers how to respond to mental health and spiritual needs of individuals following a disaster.
J. Raymond DePaulo, Jr., M.D. is being honored with the Research Award for 2007 from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The award will be presented at the AFSP's Lifesavers Dinner on May 2, 2007. Click here to link to AFSP's website.
Karen L. Swartz, M.D. was awarded the 2007 Irma Bland Award For Excellence in Teaching Residents from the American Psychiatric Association and its Council on Medical Education and Lifelong Learning. She has also been recognized by Eli Lilly and Company with the 2007 Welcome Back Award in Psychiatry for her work with depressed adolescents.
Alan Langlieb, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A. was selected by the Charles E. Kubly Foundation, a Milwaukee-based charity, to collaborate with the lieutenent governor of Wisconsin and Employee Benefits News, the nation's leading trade publication for benefits managers, to study the economic effects of depression in the Wisconsin workplace.

Jeffrey S. Janofsky, M.D. is President-Elect of The American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, an organization of psychiatrists dedicated to excellence in practice, teaching, and research in forensic psychiatry.
Constantine Lyketsos, M.D., M.P.H. received the 2006 William Proxmire Award. The honor, named for a long-time U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, recognizes Lyketsos' leadership in the fight against Alzheimer's disease.
Lee McCabe, Ph.D. has been elected President of the Academic Behavioral Health Consortium, a national network of faculty representing academic departments. The group's mission is to advance best practices in clinical, educational and care management programs in mental health.
