Professional Interests
As a general psychiatrist, my clinical expertise ranges from the care of the seriously and persistently mentally ill to those individuals with adjustment and personality disorders best addressed through psychotherapy. I supervise trainees in all mental health disciplines, in both psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, and I co-direct the Baltimore Psychotherapy Institute.
My research interests focus on mental health policy, systems and services, particularly those affecting underserved populations. Trained as a community psychiatrist, I work with different populations, in different defined settings that constitute communities, whether by virtue of geography, institutional location, economic status, religious or ethnic or other identity. I also engage in the long distance education, by way of video conferencing and telehealth programs, of front-line mental health care providers of all kinds in areas without access to psychiatric specialists.
My publications include essays on Chaucer, social perceptions resembling and affecting women and disabled populations, and reflections of a rural psychiatrist. I am currently writing a book on the 2006 fire in a Missouri group home that killed 3 chronically mentally ill residents and a staff member.
