Project Description: I am conducting two research projects both of which focus on techniques for eliciting accurate memories of experienced events from young children. The research involves administering tests to children (ages 3-9) who are in after school/summer programs. The battery of tests includes memory and suggestibility tests. The children are normally developing youngsters.
Requirements: Individual who has some experience and a good background in conducting research studies as well as working with young children. The individual must have a car to travel to the schools/summer programs.
Timeframe: Part-time positions are available through out the year to conduct and score testing.
Compensation: A volunteer, a very small stipend, or academic credit for the research experience may be arranged. Compensation for mileage will be provided for travel to and from the testing sites.

Project Description: Students can learn different aspects on the research process from an opportunity of working on one of two separate projects. The first project involves working with data gathered from families whose child was newly diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The second opportunity involves a project to reduce the use of seclusion and restraint in five publicly-supported residential and inpatient psychiatric facilities for adolescents. Individuals will be involved in cleaning and coding data collected from interviews and from the adolescent’s medical chart, assisting with data analyses, conducting literature reviews, and assisting with manuscript preparation.
Requirements: Individuals should have a good working knowledge of Excel, Word, and other Microsoft Office applications. A beginner/intermediate skill level using SPSS or other statistical packages is preferred but not necessary.
Timeframe: The position is available throughout the year. The schedule can be organized to accommodate the student’s availability.
Compensation: Academic credit for the research experience may be arranged. A small stipend may be negotiated depending upon resource availability.

Project Description: The research involves testing the efficacy of interventions for children ages 7-17 with obsessive compulsive disorder and social anxiety disorder. The RA has potential to gain experience in all aspects of the research process including administering questionnaires to children, advertising and recruiting, entering data, literature reviews, data analysis and conducting independent research.
Requirements: Individual who has some experience and a good background in conducting research studies as well as working with children and families. Preferred computer skills include Microsoft Word, SPSS, and navigating the internet for literature searches, etc.
Timeframe: The position is available as soon as January 2008. Duration of the assistantship is generally one year.
Compensation: A volunteer, a very small stipend, or academic credit for the research experience may be arranged.

Project Description: The research involves interviewing families with a child that has obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or Tourette syndrome (TS). Also investigated are family functioning patterns in families with children with OCD/TS. The specific tasks include observation of research interviews, clinical summaries, data entry, data cleaning and elementary (or advanced) data analyses that explore the contributions of gene and environmental factors on OCD, TS. The emphasis is on biological aspects of OCD, Tourette syndrome and related disorders.
Requirements: Individuals currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. Pre-med, psychology, epidemiology, statistics, data management or related areas a plus. Has an interest in OCD, TS and neuro-developmental disorders in children (ADHD, autism) and/or genetics. Is willing to participate and learn from research process.
Timeframe: Anytime during the fall, winter, spring, summer semesters or terms.
Compensation: Arrangements can be made for 10-15 hours per week paid, academic credit or volunteer status for the research experience.

Project Description: This clinical research internship provides the opportunity for students to learn and participate in current research focused on improving the safety of medications to treat children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders. Projects target alternative medications and psychosocial strategies. Interns work closely with research staff and faculty on various aspects of the clinical research projects. Internship experiences are individualized and vary depending on prior experience and areas of interest. Participation is relevant seminars is possible, depending on schedules.
Requirements: Johns Hopkins requires that undergraduate interns obtain credit from their college for this experience, as well as provide proof of health insurance and a description of insurance coverage.
Timeframe: The position is available on an ongoing basis during the summer and academic semesters.
Compensation: Academic credit can be arranged. A stipend may be available in the summer.

Project Description: The clinical research internship position provides the opportunity for students to learn and participate in current research in the Division of Child and Adolescent psychiatry at Johns Hopkins. Active studies include large federally sponsored multi-site studies. The intern will work closely with research staff and faculty in assisting with the daily activities of clinical research. The interns will also complete literature searches and develop slides for faculty presentations, and provide general administrative support. More specifically, interns assist with the data paperwork (photocopying, filing, faxing), and recruitment (helping with mailings, morning seminars for school professionals, and posting flyers in the hospital). In terms of clinical experiences, there are opportunities to administer surveys to child participants and to observe live or videotaped treatment or assessment sessions. In terms of research, interns participate in data management. As part of the research staff, the interns will have some time available to attend educational and select clinical activities within the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Requirements: Johns Hopkins requires that interns obtain credit from their college for this experience, as well as provide proof of health insurance and a description of insurance coverage. The student's insurance plan must be comparable to the plan that is offered through the school of medicine. Therefore, approval of the intern is contingent upon approval of the health insurance plan.
