Overview

Addiction Treatment Services (ATS) is a comprehensive treatment center located on the campus of The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. For individuals suffering from substance use disorder and other psychiatric illnesses, ATS provides a range of services from standard outpatient care (1-3 hours per week) to intensive outpatient care (10 hours per week).

Treatment Team

ATS uses a multidisciplinary treatment approach led by full-time psychiatrists and clinical psychologists who are nationally recognized leaders in the treatment of substance use disorder. The multidisciplinary team includes certified nurse practitioners and physician assistants, nurses, social workers, and professional counselors. The nurse practitioners and physican assistants provide admission medical evaluation and ongoing medical consultation, screening, and referral for primary and speciality care. Nurses provide medical evaluation and care, medication dispensing and teaching in individual and group sessions. Social work and professional counseling staff provide individual and group counseling and support, as well as case management services. Psychiatrists and psychologists lead the treatment team, evaluate patients, and provide direct clinical care individually and in group therapy. An individualized treatment plan is developed for each patient by the treatment team and is reviewed and revised as needed.

Adaptive Stepped-Care Approach

A structured “adaptive stepped-care" approach is used in ATS to determine the intensity of services needed to help patients gain control over their problem. This means that patients are prescribed more intensive services only when clearly indicated by the presence of continuing problems despite lower intensities of care. Specific clinical interventions include routine and specialized individual and group therapies, behavioral interventions to motivate therapy attendance, and a broad range of medications that reduce the use of alcohol and other drugs. Combining all these clinical interventions into an integrated stepped-care treatment plan is widely recognized in the field as the best overall approach to treating substance use disorder. ATS is also highly experienced in the treatment of people with substance use disorder that is complicated by the presence of depression and other psychiatric disorders.

Admissions

If you would like more information about how to coordinate admission to ATS, please contact ATS Admissions Office at  410-550-0051.

Ongoing Research

The faculty in ATS are nationally recognized for their ongoing research on how to further improve the effectiveness and overall benefits of treatment for substance abuse disorder. This includes evaluation of new strategies to improve the delivery of service to people, increase the motivation of people to participate in treatment, and improve the care of people with substance abuse disorder complicated by other psychiatric disorders or chronic pain problems.
