Una D. McCann, M.D. joined the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences as an Associate Professor in 1999. Prior to that, she served as Director of the Unit on Anxiety, Biological Psychiatry Branch, at the National Institute of Mental Health. In 2004, Dr. McCann became Director of the Anxiety Disorders Clinic at Johns Hopkins. She has a longstanding research interest in the neurobiology of anxiety disorders, with particular emphasis on neuropharmalogical and neuroimaging approaches.
O. Joseph Bienvenu, M.D., Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Associate Director of the Anxiety Disorders Clinic. He completed his psychiatric training at Johns Hopkins in 1996, having served as chief resident in his final year. Dr. Bienvenu joined the faculty full-time in 1999 after completing a research fellowship in psychiatric epidemiology and a doctorate through the Johns Hopkins Graduate Training Program in Clinical Investigation. His area of particular research interest involves the interface of personality traits and anxiety and depressive disorders, and he currently has a federal grant to expand his expertise in the genetic underpinnings of these characteristics. Dr. Bienvenu directs the academic program for resident education in the anxiety disorders and teaches medical students about these common conditions.
Rudolf Hoehn-Saric, M.D. is the most senior of the Anxiety Disorders Clinic faculty, and served as its director for 25 years. He is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Hoehn-Saric has published over 100 articles and has edited a textbook on the anxiety disorders. He has been an invited lecturer at numerous international meetings, where he has given lectures about his research on anxiety disorders. His current research involves the use of neuroimaging techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to elucidate the neurobiology of anxiety and its disorders.
James A. Fauerbach, Ph.D. has been a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences since 1991. He is chief psychologist on the burn trauma services at the Johns Hopkins Hospital (pediatrics) and the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (adults), and Director of Cognitive Behavioral Training in the Anxiety Disorders Clinic at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. His research, focusing on the role of emotion and psychopathology in illness and injury, has been supported by federal and private agencies.
Brett Thombs, Ph.D. is a Clinical Psychology postdoctoral fellow with clinical experience in treating anxiety disorders with cognitive-behavioral therapy. In addition to the Anxiety Disorders Program, Dr. Thombs works with patients with severe burns at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center / Baltimore Regional Burn Center. Prior to coming to Johns Hopkins, Dr. Thombs did his clinical internship training at the Cognitive Therapy Clinic of the Weill-Cornell Medical Center in New York City.
