Professional Interests

I have long maintained an extensive grant-supported research program focused on both pharmacological and behavioral approaches to the treatment of substance abuse. One primary interest has been in developing and testing contingency management interventions that can motivate positive behavior change in drug abusers enrolled in methadone or drug-free treatment.   This area of research has now been extended to conduct of  multi-site abstinence incentive studies within the National Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network. In the tobacco dependence arena, my primary interest is understanding variables that  influence relapse. Using short-term models of cessatio and relapse, variables can be  experimentally manipulated, allowing causal inferences to be made. Some current studies model early smoking lapses during a quit attempt to examine the potential "priming" influence of smoke exposure while others test new treatment approaches that may counteract the deletory effects of early smoking slips and lapses during a quit attempt.
