March 16, 2009- Two of the world’s leading experts in cardiac surgery will be in Pavia, Italy, tomorrow to attend the signing ceremony of a three-year collaboration agreement between Johns Hopkins Medicine International and San Matteo Hospital. The Johns Hopkins physicians — Duke Cameron, M.D., professor of surgery, acting cardiac surgeon-in-charge (Baltimore, MD, USA), and Luca Vricella, M.D., assistant professor, chief of pediatric heart and lung transplantation (Baltimore, MD, USA) — will be available for interviews after the event.
The collaboration with San Matteo Hospital is the first cardiac surgery project of its kind for Johns Hopkins Medicine International (JHI) in Europe. Cardiac surgeons, perfusionists, nurses and anesthesiologist from Johns Hopkins will share their expertise and conduct up to 20 surgeries per year with their colleagues at San Matteo Hospital. Three observers from San Matteo Hospital will also visit Baltimore (MD, USA) to learn about Johns Hopkins’ cutting-edge clinical research and innovations.

Duke Cameron, M.D., the James T. Dresher Sr. Professor of Surgery, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; acting cardiac surgeon-in-charge, The Johns Hopkins Hospital; director of pediatric cardiac surgery, The Johns Hopkins Hospital; director of The Dana and Albert "Cubby" Broccoli Center for Aortic Diseases at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. One of the world’s authorities in cardiac valve surgeries and Marfan syndrome, Cameron specializes in adult and pediatric cardiac surgery, cardiac transplantation, mitral valve repair, and aortic surgery including valve-sparing aortic root replacement. He focuses his research on inflammation and cardiopulmonary bypass, hypothermic circulatory arrest and aortic surgery.

Luca Vrichella, M.D., assistant professor of surgery, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; chief of pediatric heart and lung transplantation, The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Luca Vricella’s clinical interests include pediatric cardiac surgery, pediatric cardiac transplantation, complex aortic root surgery and adult congenital heart surgery. He focuses his research on clinical outcomes in pediatric heart surgery and brain protection in pediatric heart surgery.
