Edward D. Miller, M.D., Dean of the Medical Faculty at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and CEO, Johns Hopkins Medicine, will testify before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Tuesday, March 11, at 11 a.m. in the Dirksen Room 430 on the growing risks to American medical research resulting from continued flat funding by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Miller’s testimony coincides with the publication of a report titled A Broken Pipeline? Flat Funding of the NIH Puts a Generation of Science at Risk, that details the crisis in medical research funding and which will be presented to Congress March 11, 2008. The report was put together by a consortium of research institutions including Harvard University, Columbia University, Partners Healthcare, University of Texas at Austin, Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Brown University, Duke Medicine, The Ohio State University, Yale University, and the University of California, Los Angeles. Miller will describe how years of stagnant NIH budgets outpaced by inflation threaten the future of biomedical research and could thwart advances in treatments that are within reach.
