NEPHROLOGY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
II. Nephrology Conferences
A series of multi-disciplinary seminars and conferences provide a framework of formal instruction to complement the practical training of a postdoctoral fellowship in a clinical department. Members of the Faculty and the postdoctoral fellows attend weekly conferences.
- Tutorials in Nephrology: This is a two year course consisting of lectures (40 in year 1 and 40 in year 2). These tutorials include topics in pathology, fluid, electrolyte and acid-base disorders, hypertensive disorders, mineral metabolism (including renal osteodystrophy), end-stage renal disease and dialysis (HD, PD, CRRT), urinary tract infections, renal disorders of pregnancy, vascular disease (including atherosclerotic diseases), systemic renal disease (diabetes), and geriatric aspects of nephrology, genetic and hereditary renal diseases, urinary tract abnormalities, glomerular and tubulointerstitial disease, acute and chronic renal failure. This is a multi disciplinary course is taught by clinical and basic science faculty from The Johns Hopkins University, Departments of Medicine, Pathology, Urology, Radiology, Surgery, Immunology and by visiting Faculty from other institutions. This conference is attended by faculty members of the Nephrology Division. The purpose of this course is to provide a systematic review of clinical nephrology for the benefit of the postdoctoral Fellows and members of the Faculty. Lunch is provided.
- Renal Rounds: These lectures consist of Hopkins Faculty or invited speakers discussing topics through case presentations or lectures on all aspects of clinical nephrology. Case presentations usually incorporate renal biopsy material with interpretation from our renal pathologists.
- Hopkins Kidney Center Research Conference: This weekly conference consists of basic science research seminars given by second year Fellows, Faculty and collaborators of the Hopkins Kidney Center, and invited speakers, both outside the Nephrology Division and from other institutions.
- Basic Science/Clinical Science Journal Club: This weekly conference reviews important scientific papers in Nephrology. Fellows present assigned papers and give background information, critique methods, discuss results and conclusions.
- July Core Lecture Series: Core lectures covering basis topics in Nephrology are given daily in July.
- Renal Biopsy Conference: Renal Pathologists of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine review Native and transplant biopsy cases from the previous week. Cases from outside institutions are also reviewed.
- Renal Transplantation Conference: Topics covering all aspects of renal transplantation are reviewed by Hopkins faculty and invited speakers.
