Richard Rothman, MD, PhD

Co-InvestigatorRichard Rothman

Dr. Rothman is an Associate Professor at the JH School of Medicine Emergency Medicine Clinical Programs. His research focus is infectious diseases, including infective endocarditis, HIV testing and HIV-related illnesses, pneumonia, and novel diagnostic strategies for bacteremia.  Most recently, he began work on development of novel diagnostic tests for emerging and biothreat pathogens, as part of a team of investigators funded by an NIH Center Grant for Excellence. He will be overseeing the implementation of a self-administered HIV POCT in the Emergency Department at JH.

Dr. Rothman developed his current translational research program through doctoral training in cellular and molecular biology at UCSF, clinical training in emergency medicine, course work and experience during his research fellowship training, and subsequent multidisciplinary collaborations both internal and external to Johns Hopkins University. His work focuses on basic molecular innovations (such as polymerase chain reaction) for rapid detection of biologic agents in acute care settings. He has been a leader in the field of the use of rapid tests for the diagnosis of HIV in Emergency Departments (ED). The ability to bridge both clinical, laboratory, and epidemiological surveillance methods makes him uniquely qualified to be a co-investigator for the use of POCT and their transition to OTC use project in the ED setting. He has served as PI or co-investigator for several collaborations with biotech companies including LINK technology for evaluation of sepsis markers, and Abbott for evaluation of PCR for sexually transmitted diseases. Dr. Rothman is the Research Fellowship Director in the Department of Emergency Medicine and serves as a consultant both for the biotech industry in the biothreat arena, and for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the area of acute diagnosis of infectious diseases, including HIV.

Dr. Rothman will provide direction and coordination for testing existing (HIV) and new POCTs at the primary care site in the ED, ensuring that the overall goals and objectives are met. Guidance will also be provided as to appropriateness and use of assays for clinical use in the ED setting.
