Dr. Martin is the Director of the NIAID funded Gulf South Sexually Transmitted Diseases Topical Microbicides Cooperative Research Center (STI TM CRC). He is also the STI TM CRC Project 2 Leader (The Role of Mycoplasma genitalium in Infertility) and the Director of the Core Laboratory. He is a Co-investigator in STI Clinical Trials Group and serves on the Scientific Review Committee of that organization. He is the Harry E. Dascomb, M.D. Professor of Medicine; Professor of Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology and Chief, Section of Infectious Diseases within the Department of Internal Medicine at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. He is past president of the International Society for Sexually Transmitted Diseases Research, the American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association and the Louisiana/Mississippi Infectious Diseases Society.
Dr. Martin has served on numerous Centers for Disease Control expert panels in the areas of treatment, diagnosis and prevention of STDs. His major forte is the conduct of multi-component STD research projects but he has always combined laboratory work with field or clinical epidemiological research. He has written extensively on the subject of STD diagnosis primarily for Chlamydia trachomatis. He has extended this work to current interests in the new STI Mycoplasma genitalium and bacterial vaginosis.
