The Department of Medicine held its research retreat entitled 'Individualized Care in Medicine' on Monday, April 28, 2008. This half-day retreat took place at the Mt. Washington Conference Center from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00p.m. Format of this retreat included:
- Moderated Poster Sessions of select Research Abstracts
- General Research Poster Sessions
- Keynote speaker: Kristina M. Johnson, Provost and Sr. Vice President of Academic Affairs, Johns Hopkins University
- Panel presentations on key topics
- Presentation of the David M. Levine Excellence in Mentoring Awards
- Presentation of Research Awards in four categories:
a. Basic Research, Fellows; b. Clinical Research, Fellows; c. Basic Research, Jr. Faculty; d. Clinical Research, Jr. Faculty
It was an exciting event with attendance of nearly 200 faculty, fellows, and research staff. If you have any suggestions for next year, please do not hesitate to contact one of the co-chairs via email:

There were four award categories this year. To be considered for an award, the author had to complete a three-page summary to accompany the abstract. Abstracts were judged by the retreat steering committee. First place winners in each category received a cash award of $500; second place winners received a medal. Many thanks to IBM Healthcare, Schering-Plough Corporation, and Sanofi-Aventis for funding these awards and other aspects of the retreat.

Basic Research Junior Faculty Awards

Clinical Research Fellow Awards
First Prize: Nisa Maruthur, M.D. "Lifestyle Interventions Reduce Estimated Framingham Risk: Results from the PREMIER Trial" Abstract #35
Clinical Research Junior Faculty Awards
First Prize: Sharon Turban, M.D. "Racial Differences in Urinary Potassium Excretion in the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) Trial" Abstract #46
