Research Opportunities

The founders of Johns Hopkins Hospital intended that Hopkins' doctors not only learn the latest advances, but also discover new knowledge to improve the care of patients. Research in the Department of Medicine has flourished: it now receives more funding from the National Institutes of Health than any other department of medicine in the country. In this setting, opportunities for housestaff participation in research abound.

To facilitate housestaff research, the Department of Medicine provides seminars on research techniques and designates a small group of faculty to help "incubate" housestaff research proposals. The Department of Medicine also provides housestaff with elective time to conduct research and underwrites the cost of attending national meetings in order to present research results. In recent years, numerous housestaff research projects have been presented at national meetings and published in the medical literature.
