Linda Fried, M.D., director of the division of Geriatrics, was selected as the recipient of the 2005 Irving Wright Award of Distinction of the American Federation for Aging Research. This award honors individuals who have made exceptional contributions to basic or clinical research or to the encouragement of such research in the field of aging. In the past, the award has gone to 25 eminent recipients.
Dessy Kopchaliyska, Ph.D., Immunogenetics Unit, is the recipient of the ASHI Scholar Award. This award from the American Society for Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics is given to the first author of one of the top 3 ranking abstracts submitted for the 31st annual ASHI meeting.
Sue Leffell, Ph.D. and Co-Director of the Immunogenetics Unit, was appointed to the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Organ Transplantation. This Committee was established to assist the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary in enhancing organ donation and ensuring that the system of organ transplantation is grounded in the best available medical science. Dr. Leffell is the first person from the field to be appointed to the committee.

Gregory Germino, Nephrology, is the recipient of the Lillian Kaplan International Prize for Outstanding PKD Contributions (sponsored by the International Society of Nephrology, the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, and the Kaplan family) bestowed upon 1-2 investigators/cycle for their work in the PKD field. The award was begun in 2003 and will run through 2013. The award includes a $50,000 honorarium and will be presented in June, 2005 in Singapore at the International Congress of Nephrology. Dr. Stefan Somlo of Yale University is a co-awardee.
Jonathan E. Golub, Division of Infectious Diseases, received a Research Scientist Development Award (K01) was awarded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Project Title: Epidemiologic Strategies for Tuberculosis Control

The Johns Hopkins Heart Institute has been selected by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) as the home for the sole cardiac regeneration center in a nationwide competition for Specialized Centers for Cell-based Therapy (SCCTs). This award will significantly elevate The Johns Hopkins Heart Institute's national presence in the stem cell area. The Investigators include Josh Hare, Eduardo Marban, and Rick Lange from the Cardiology Division.

Fred Brancati, director of the division of General Internal Medicine, received the 2005 Novartis Young Investigator of the Year Award, to be awarded at this year's ADA Meeting in San Diego. The Novartis Award is intended to recognize innovative patient-oriented research in the fields of physiology, pathophysiology or epidemiology of diabetes mellitus and its complications.
Richard George, a Cardiology fellow, is the recipient of this year's Silverman Research Award. The $500 prize is awarded annually to a second year fellow whose research proposal is judged by the faculty as having the best overall potential.
Antony Rosen, director of the division of Rheumatology, was recently elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, which inducts only two faculty members each year. Alpha Omega Alpha is the national medical honor society that recognizes scholarship, leadership, and humanism.

Gail Berkenblit, General Internal Medicine, is a 2005 recipient of the Lawrence Linn Award for HIV Research. The $10,000 award will support Berkenblit's research on quality of life for patients with HIV. It is named for Dr. Linn, a sociologist and health services researcher at UCLA who was a pioneer in the field.
Ebony Boulware, General Internal Medicine, was just selected to serve on the American College of Physicians 'Council of Young Physicians', representing the Northeastern United States. In this leadership post, Dr. Boulware will help influence educational, scientific, and policy missions of the College.
Lisa Cooper, General Internal Medicine, was inducted into The American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI). Established in 1908, it is one of the nation's oldest and most respected medical honor societies. Individuals are elected to membership who have accomplished meritorius original and independent investigations in the clinical sciences of medicine. Dr. Cooper was recognized for her contributions to research on health care disparities and patient-physician communication.
Kerry Dunbar, ACS of Janeway Firm, will be recognized for outstanding leadership by The Johns Hopkins University Women's Network and will be presented with this fifth annual Women's Leadership Award at the Spring Luncheon on May 13, 2005.
Neil Powe, General Internal Medicine, was recently elected to The Association of American Physicians. It was founded in 1885 by seven physicians, including Dr. William Osler, for "the advancement of scientific and practical medicine." Each year, 55 individuals having attained excellence in achieving these goals, are recognized nationally by nomination for membership at the annual meeting. Dr. Powe was selected to deliver one of the two new member presentations at the annual meeting. The title of his presentation was "Assessing Care Processes and Outcomes for Kidney Disease Quality of Care.".
Dr. Powe is also a 2005 recipient of the John Eisenberg Award for Career Achievement in Research, to be presented at the SGIM Plenary Session, Friday, May 13, in New Orleans, LA. Dr. Eisenberg was a well respected, and well loved expert in health services research, and former Chair of Medicine at Georgetown and Director of AHRQ. The Award recognizes Dr. Powe's enormous impact on the field, both in his research, and in the research produced by his countless trainees.

She was also recently appointed to a UNOS committee that is reviewing the national policies for the allocation of deceased donor kidneys.

At its annual national meeting, 5/1/04, the National Kidney Foundation awarded the 2004 Garabed Eknoyan Award to Neil R. Powe MD, Director of the Welch Center. Dr. Powe spoke the topic of 'Understanding Disparities in Chronic Kidney Disease to Improve Health Outcomes.' The Garabed Eknoyan Award was created to recognize an individual who has promoted the vision of the National Kidney Foundation in Making Lives Better for people with chronic kidney disease by special contributions to the Foundation.
Anne M. Rompalo MD assumed the Chair of the Woman's Task Force just this month. This will continue a tradition that began in 1990 and has been continuously active. Dr. Rompalo will be meeting with the executive committee of the Task Force and the Division Directors. Her position is effective immediately.
Two DOM members were honored by President Brody and the Johns Hopkins Diversity Leadership Council with the 2nd Annual Diversity Recognition Award at a Reception held at Decker Gardens, Homewood campus: Gary Wand MD and Courtney Goodwin.
Susan MacDonald MD was one of 10 women who were honored at the 1st Annual YWCA Leader event for her accomplishments in Science and Education. These Special Leader Awards are presented to those exemplifying the YWCA's vision of the economic empowerment of women, leadership, and the elimination of racism.
Edward Kraus MD, John Morcos MD, and the staff of the Immunogenetics Laboratory, including directors Sue Leffell MD, and Andrea Zachary MD were all nominated to receive the "Catch a Shining Star" award. "Catch a Shining Star" is a recognition program designed to acknowledge employees or teams, who demonstrate outstanding Service Excellence and inspire others to do their best.
Pat Thomas MD was elected to the Johns Hopkins Alpha Omega Alpha Chapter. Only two faculty members are selected each year and this honor epitomizes the scholarship, leadership, and humanism that the Society promotes.
Roy Ziegelstein MD was named the 23rd recipient of the Professors Award for Distinction in Teaching in the Clinical Sciences. Dr. Ziegelstein has been a tireless and most effective leader of the Medical Housestaff Program at Bayview and is an active and productive cardiovascular investigator as well.

Just elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation, a prestigious group among which 62 are elected nationwide for independent research achievement as a young faculty member, are Robert Weiss, Cardiology, and Steven Brant, Gastroenterology.
Pei-Song Gao, Clinical Immunology, and a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Shau-ku Huang was chosen to receive a 2004 Sepracor Research Excellence Award from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Congratulations to him for receiving this important award.
Eboni Price, General Internal Medicine, was selected as one of 12 finalists considered for the Lipkin award and her abstract, THE ROLE OF CULTURAL DIVERSITY CLIMATE IN RECRUITMENT, PROMOTION AND RETENTION OF FACULTY IN ACADEMIC MEDICINE, was among 706 total abstracts submitted for the 27th SGIM Annual Meeting. Dr. Price will give an oral presentation this May.
Adriana Andrade, Infectious Diseases, received a Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) grant entitled "A multiple dose prospective study to determine the effects of American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) on the pharmacokinetics of indinavir and as a potential treatment for indinavir-induced insulin resistance." This award was made by a supplemental CAM award on Dr. Martin Abeloff's grant. Total amount is $124,004 and the award was received 09/27/02.

Hossein Ardehali , Cardiology, received the 2004 Competitive Grants Award Program for Young Investigators, sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline Research & Education Foundation for Cardiovascular Disease. Hossein, a cardiology fellow, was 1 of 4 recipients who received this award, in which the competitive program was open to junior cardiology faculty and fellows from around the world. $50,000 per year for two years.

Neil Powe , Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research, received the Mary Betty Stevens Award for Excellence in Clinical Research from the American College of Physicians Maryland Chapter. The late Mary Betty Stevens was a faculty member at Hopkins who exemplified excellence in clinical research.
Cristiana Stellato , Allergy and Clinical Immunology, received the 2004 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI)/Aventis Women Physician in Allergy Junior Faculty Development Award. This award's objective is to support a female junior faculty member in the specialty of allergy, asthma and immunology at a U.S. Medical School and funding is to support education and research and to promote the specialty. $40,000 total costs for two years, starting 7/1/04
James Weiss, Cardiology, received the Committment to Diversity Award from the Association of Black Cardiologists. It is presented annually to a cardiology training program that has demonstrated a committment to increasing the number of African American cardiolgists in the United States. Weiss, a professor, accepted this award on behalf of the Cardiology Division as a whole at the upcoming American College of Cardiolgy meeting in New Orleans this month.
Jodi Segal , Assistant Professor in Hematology, and Mingzhao Xing, Assistant Professor in Endocrinology, are both recipients of the Clinician Scientist Award.
Sarah White , a Post-doctoral Fellow from Rheumatology, has just been awarded the Carol Macht Award. This is a very prestigious award given to someone in a highly accomplished group, and brings great credit to the Division of Rheumatology and the Department.
Charles Leng , Cardiology, received an American Heart Association-National Scientist Development Grant, beginning 01/01/2004 – 12/31/07 entitled “Physiology of non-perfusing cardiac arrest rhythms.” $65,000/year for 6 years.
Enid Neptune , Pulmonary & Critical Care medicine, received the March of Dimes' Basil O'Connor Starter Scholar Research Award, beginning 02/01/2004 - 01/31/2006 entitled "The Role of Hepatocyte Growth Factor in Alveolar Formation." $150,000 for 2 years.
Mark Donowitz , the LeBoff Professor of Medicine, has been nominated for the leadership sequence of the American Gastroenterology Association. It is anticipated over the next three years he will be Vice President, President Elect and then President of the largest and most important GI professional organization. This achievement clearly reflects Dr. Donowitz' contributions to the field and his personal vision of the future of his field and his major role in the development of the excellent Division of Gastroenterology at Hopkins.
Don Martin , recently received the American College of Rheumatology Clinician Scholar Educator award. This award provides national recognition to Dr. Martin's tremendous contribution to Rheumatology, the department, and Johns Hopkins.

Steven Georas , Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, received an RO1 grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, beginning 01/01/2004 - 11/30/2007 entitled "LPA and Edg Receptors in the Pulmonary Immune Response." $250,000 direct costs/year for almost 4 years
Harmut Schneider , Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, received a K23 grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, beginning 01/05/2004 - 12/31/2008 entitled "Physiologic phenotypes for obstructive sleep apnea."
Dr. Mille Samaniego was recently appointed to the Basic Science Committee of the American Society of Transplantation for three years. This is a great honor for Dr. Samaniego as well as our Institution.
Susan Zieman, M.D., Assistant Professor of Cardiology, has recently been awarded the T. Franklyn Williams Society of Geriatric Cardiology Association of Subspecialty Professors’ Junior Faculty Career Development Award in Geriatric Medicine. The intent of this award is to integrate subspecialty fields with the core issues in aging for purposes of education, clinical care and clinically related research. The award provides $50,000 per year for two years plus travel monies.
Dr. Gregory Germino, Professor of Medicine, Division of Nephrology, has been elected to the membership in the Council of the American Society for Clinical Investigation. The Council is an extremely important group in that it governs the conduct of the Society. This organization, as most of you know, publishes the Journal of Clinical Investigation, and is an organization, which recognizes young research-oriented faculty for independent research and research achievement.
Dr. Wendy Post, Assistant Professor in Cardiology was awarded a Beeson Scholar in Aging Award from the American Foundation of Aging Research (AFAR).
